Shaping Our Future: Embracing AI and Technology with Wisdom and Equity

Human nature does not change. We all want to survive, to succeed, to love & be loved and admired, to take care of our own. Only the superficial things change.

God through Nature gave us a creative instinct that makes us question the world we live in. This curiosity lead to better ideas and innovation - the invention of technology. Cooking food, clothes, cars, medicine and internet are all results of man's curiosity!

Without curiosity we may still be living in caves! Technology has filled our time with meaningful content and entertainment so that we feel satisfied and happy.

Technology refers to the use of knowledge on practical things that one does with the help of tools and techniques. Use of technology has changed the way we behave and operate.

Many, and i included, believe that technology has done more good than harm to humans..............so far.

From communication and transport to healthcare and connectivity, technology has enhanced our lives for the better.

This was so because we were wise to use technology as tools rather than allow it to dictate how we live and enslaving us to its agenda.

Without technology, society would regress by at least 50 years.

Imagine what it would be like to survive a day without technology. It would be miserable.

As I wrote above technology has done more good than harm to society till now.

But AI is raising questions that are troubling us at individual and at society level. The following are thoughts of Yuvel Harari, the great thinker:

1) Today we are seeing the power of AI - unlike any other invention, it is the first tool in human history that can make decisions by itself.

2) Though human's are imaginative suddenly we have a competition with a tool that can create new ideas by itself.

3) Though most humans are wise, there are those who will use technology to control others. We saw it Nazism, communism, Islamists. Making similar mistakes with AI, could really be the end of our species.

4) AI has till now been the collection of our knowledge and we are learning from it. But it is also learning from us, using us already.

The risks are there. Imagine AI takes decisions on the control of nuclear weapons, the outcome of election results.

Can we do something about it. Let us try to think together:

Societal Recommendations:

Promote Responsible Innovation: Encourage the development of technology, including AI, with ethical considerations at the forefront. This involves creating frameworks and regulations that ensure technology serves the public interest and does not harm society.

Education and Awareness: Increase investment in education to foster a society that is knowledgeable about technology. This includes understanding both its potential and its risks, ensuring that people can make informed decisions about how technology is integrated into their lives.

Democratic Oversight: Implement democratic processes to oversee the development and deployment of AI. This can help prevent the misuse of technology by those who might seek to use it to control others, as has been seen in various authoritarian regimes.

Foster Innovation While Ensuring Equity: While nurturing innovation, it's crucial to ensure that the benefits of technology, including AI, are distributed equitably across society. This can help prevent the creation of a digital divide and ensure that all segments of society can benefit from technological advancements.

Global Collaboration: Work towards international cooperation in the governance of AI to address global challenges and prevent a race to the bottom in ethical standards. This can help mitigate the risks of AI being used as a tool for control or warfare.

Individual Recommendations:

Stay Informed: As individuals, it is important to stay informed about technological trends and understand how they may impact our lives. This knowledge can empower us to make better decisions about the technology we use and support.

Critical Thinking: Develop critical thinking skills to evaluate the information and technology we encounter. This can help us discern between beneficial uses of technology and those that may be harmful or manipulative.

Advocate for Ethical Technology: Individuals can advocate for responsible technology development by supporting companies and policies that prioritize ethical considerations and by speaking out against the misuse of technology.

Personal Responsibility: Take personal responsibility for how we use technology. This includes being mindful of our digital footprint, protecting our privacy, and not allowing technology to dictate our lives or infringe upon our autonomy.

Lifelong Learning: Engage in lifelong learning to keep up with technological advancements and to be able to adapt to the changing landscape. This can help ensure that we remain competitive and can harness technology for our own benefit.

May be these recommendations get society and individuals to work together to ensure that technology, and AI in particular, is used in a way that maximizes its benefits while minimizing its risks.

Technology is a tool, and its impact depends on how we choose to use it.
